Decluttering Can Improve Your Mental Health
My mom always said everything has its place and there is a place for everything. Mom was very organized and always put the things back. Mom lived in a quieter time with less demands. Mom always said we do not waste time looking for what we need if things are organized.
I am not sure how Mom would keep her orderly home with today’s schedules.
Maintaining a balance between work and home life can be overwhelming sometimes. Becoming overloaded with the demands of life can cause us to avoid responsibilities. Avoiding things can increase stress and anxiety. Decluttering can help reduce some of the stress and anxiety of life while providing a greater sense of control over our immediate environment.
Clutter, disorganization, or messiness can bring on the feelings of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. We can cause us to feel disorganized and be less productive in a cluttered environment. Feelings of depression or being in a fight or flight state can increase if we are in a cluttered space.
We do not have to take a weekend to organize our home environment to feel the benefits of less clutter. Choose one area and start there. It can be a great time to pay it forward by sharing things no longer in use with others. Imagine the joy and lightness from organizing and decluttering one space. Taking the time to create a decluttering plan can help keep momentum moving forward with a celebration reward at the end.
Perhaps there was something to Mom’s wise words.
